Types of Electric Wheelchairs

Electric wheelchairs can be classified in distinct variations – portable, rear drive, mid drive and outoor (larger generally also mid drive), they are also often referred to as being indoor/outdoor, indoor etc. We have chosen to use the drive type to classify and our “Electric Wheelchair Guide” will expand upon this. Whilst rear drive models are more conventional, Mid drive electric wheelchairs with 6 wheels on the ground, offer the best handling options of all, particularly in small spaces.

Regardless of the model, many different electric wheelchairs include optional features such as, powered seat raise, power recline, and power tilt.. These features give you a variety of postural changes and support and can help with the management of pressure issues.

Electric wheelchairs run on rechargeable batteries and the majority run on 12-volt Gel batteries.

Users with spinal cord or head injuries have the option of a ‘sip and puff’ system which offers independent management of their chairs by blowing into uniquely designed tubes positioned near their mouths, which manage the functions and movements of their chairs.

With the appropriate attention, all users can take advantage a lifetime of stress-free mobility.
